Pony Play – Exercises

Pony Exercises

We cannot stress this enough: pony training is hard work for both and requires several years of training – usually daily training.

It is very appealing to immediately start dressage training – in other words making her walk, pull a sulky and things like that. However, experienced pony owners will tell you that starting these types of training in an early stage is usually counter productive. Meditation, acceptance and simply getting used to a strict and firm – yet reasonable training scheme is much more important and this is established through position training, rather than dressage.

Below is an actual example of an initial (roughly covering the first year) of such a training scheme.

As you can see it focuses mainly on position training and daily meditation – a set up the pony can also go through without immediate guidance of the owner, which makes this particular scheme especially useful in situations, where the owner is simply unavailable on a daily basis (because of work or because the relationship is a long distance one, for example).

The main importance is the strictness of the training.

She must train on a daily basis (if possible) or at least in a regular scheme. Hence she must dedicate time, energy and effort to her training and at times place it on top of other priorities. For example, if she goes out with friends on Wednesday evenings she can do so, but only AFTER her daily pony training. That is one of the main reasons why your training scheme should be a reasonable one. Especially – as in the case below – if the scheme is based on daily training, it should be feasible. Totally interfering with her daily social and economical life first of all won’t work and secondly will only work counterproductive.

The scheme below is an indication and of course this can be changed and adapted to personal preference as well as situation. However, it does give a clear indication of how much effort has to be put into pony training, as well as its possibilities.

The must do’s

In order to have any success there are a few must do’s.

For example, prior to commencing her training the pony MUST dress up in full gear or clothing (whichever is required), she must adjust make up and hairdo if this is part of her role.

The owner must be fair but very strict.

Only real emergencies are a reason for not following the projected training scheme and the owner MUST make sure she sticks to it under all circumstances, even if this is difficult, requires her to adjust her schedule or during the times she has doubts, second thoughts or feels uncertainty.

This may be tough. The owner’s inclination will be understand the wants and needs of his pony and there is nothing wrong with that – however, at the same time his attitude – and a subtle mix between pushing her and understanding at the same time – is required to be successful.

Regular check ups and tests will help to monitor her development of course. Punishments will also help. However, punishments are usually only a small part of any animal role playing. Convincing, guiding and emphasizing the teamwork aspects of pony play ar much more important and useful ingredients, even if – to the owner/dominant – this seems to be “the slow way”. It probably is, but that way is the only effective way. Trying to compel any break through by way of punishment will eventually only work counterproductive. Understanding will work much better, especially if the pony feels she is understood and she herself understands the situation.

Always remember! SAFETY FIRST! and please use common sense.
