There are two explanations for the name of this suspension bondage: Tobíkomi or – in English – the dive. One has to do with its position – more or less diagonal and the head below the feet. Actually the other one is more likely. Tobikomi is frequently used as an end-bondage. In other words, the last one in the session where subspace leads to crescendo. That is why you will frequently see Tobíkomi in combination with (a lot) of other impulses, both pain and (intens) embarrassement.
Although Tobíkomi is the logical follow up to Ya, it is also frequently used as the first – and last – suspension position after a long non-suspension session. In other words, a position that allows for a lot of possibilities. However, it is one that should not be executed without sufficient training (both giver and recipient) and without some experimenting to find out if the recipient is at all up to this position.
In this position the head is below the heart. This leads to intensified bloodpressure in the skull and can cause headaches, dizzyness, nausea, disorientation and possibly fainting. In any case the duration of this suspension should be restricted to between 15 and 20 minutes as the ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM.
It has two basic characteristics: the position must be diagonal with the feet closest to the ceiling and the head closest to the floor and there must be at least two support ropes (one for the feet and one for the waist. There will however usually be more, because it is unlikely the recipient will be able to cope with the strain if there is insufficient support. Only very experienced and well-trained Doreis will be able to cope with absolute minimum support. The bondage can be made either belly-up or belly down.
What are looking at from a sfatey and health point of view? Well, in all honesty, there are some risks involved here.
tobíkomi
♠ Blood circulation: Any position where the head is below the hearthas a direct influence on the blood circulation. More blood is being pumped towards the brain (the head) and this may lead to nausea, fainting and headaches. Which is why it is not a good idea to use this bondage on recipients suffering from regular headaches, diabetes or seizures, have any skull pressure problems (eye or ear pressure) and who – in general – are not feeling very well. Do not perform this suspension when the recipient is (close to) having her period! Also, in the event your partner is tired or has been facing a stressful situation in every day life, don’t do this bondage. In other words, she needs to be healthy and relaxed.
♠ Blockage: Do check and recheck all ropes frequently. The shifting weight will have an effect on all parts of the bondage. Make sure no veins and arteries are being blocked as a result of this. You may be required to adjust some of the ropes. A good trick is to have some sanatory towels available. The can be placed in between the rope and the body to relief a local blockage quickly and sufficiently. Use two or three on top of each other. This is also very useful in case a rope is very painfully pressing against a bone somewhere.
♠ Safety: In many cases this bondage will be the follow up to Ya. In fact what you do is adapt Ya and lower the support ropes for the torso and waist, while leaving the support ropes for the feet untouched. This should be done with care and in several stages. Make sure you lower all ropes only a few inches at the time and resecure them firmly. The shift from a more or less balanced position towards a more gravity-related position has an effect on all support ropes.
Disorientation
Another thing to take into account is disorientation. The recipient is likely to go into deep trance, since you are working towards the end of your session and the position as such leads to temporary disorientation anyway. This may (temporarily) cause a panic reaction. This is why it is a very good idea to do one or two practise sessions, so the recipient will know what will happen and learns to trust.
