Cages appeal to many and indeed they can be both functional and fun, they make things very realistic. However, before planning to buy or build one, it is a good idea to consider your options and plans first. Almost all cages are expensive and many are custom built or designed. And you do not want to spend a lot of money on something that eventually doesn’t do what it is supposed to do.
Cages can be used in many different ways: just to hold the sub for a while or to punish her. For some, real time, slaves the cage is actually their own “room”, it is where she lives. To others, it is a dreaded holding facility used for punishment or training. And it is these things that you have to consider before planning on buying or building a cage. One main important thing: cages should be solid and sturdy, impossible to get out without the key, otherwise they simply don’t do what they are supposed to do. You will probably need real steel bars.
The main objective of a cage – as opposed to a cell – is twofold. First, the steel bars offer no privacy to the slave inside. Basically she can be observed by anyone at any time while caged and that is one major item. Secondly of course there is the connection with animals.
HOLDING FACILITY
If your cage is to be a holding facility – in other words if the slave is supposed to be there for longer periods of time – is it first of all a good idea to opt for a somewhat more spacious design, that at least offers the ability to stand up straight, move about a bit and maybe even (simple) toilet and washing facilities.
The reason for this is actually quite simple. The main result of any confinement, either cell or cage, is pure boredom and loneliness, even after “only” a few hours.
The restricted freedom, the inability to communicate and the fact that she is restricted to only a few square yards with nothing else to do but wait (and maybe sleep) is an intense experience, even for the most experienced sub. If the cage is too small, this will surely have an impact on her physical and mental health and as appealing as it may seem to lock her up in an uncomfortable (like one hands and knees) position for a longer period of time is outright cruel and potentially dangerous.
This is the experience of Brenda, a TPE-slave from Germany:
“Basically I live in a cage. It is in the attic, only two by two meters and that is where I sleep, eat and spend most of the day, unless Master has use for me. In the morning, on workdays, before he leaves the house, Master lets me out so I can wash myself. The rest of the day I will spend doing my household and other duties but I must make sure that I am back in my cage before he gets home and lock the gate behind me. If that, for example, means I am not yet done with my duties, that – and the consequences – is something I have to accept. I must make sure I eat enough during a workday, because on workdays I will not be fed or let out of the cage unless Master has some use for me.”
“During weekends – again unless Master wants to use me or have me around – I will only be allowed to leave the cage twice, supervised, to be able to wash, eat and visit the bathroom.”
“It took me a long time to adjust to being caged. Especially in the beginning – and that lasted several months – I had great difficulty accepting it. Master allows me to have some books, so I am not bored to death completely, but the lights go out around ten in the evening (at least in my cage). The cage is large enough for me to fully stretch, which is important and the bed is comfortable, albeit a very lonely bed sometimes. There is sufficient room in my cage to do some exercises, which is especially helpful if I’m kept there for an entire day during weekends. Even though Master will hardly ever leave me in the cage for an entire day – and even though I have now been used to this situation for several years – it still is important that have sufficient space to move about and DO something.”
A cage, used for any form of longer confinement, should at least have the following features:
• A reasonably comfortable single bed, that will also function as a couch (don’t even think about straw on the ground for any longer stay).
• An alarm system – preferably a bell or a horn – so the sub can warn the dom in the event of distress. By the way: NEVER leave a sub alone in a cage. There SHOULD always be someone home to be able to deal with emergencies.
• A full proof lock – in other words a lock that will also open in a stress situation.
• A heating system that can be kept at a level where the sub – who has little room to move about – will remain warm.
• At least some items to keep her mind busy, such as books or magazines. If the mind is not kept busy, heavy fear visions will emergency during confinement.
• Depending on your abilities as well as the confinement regime, you may need at least a very minor toilet facility. In general, since nothing can ever be fully predicted, experienced dominants will make sure cages – used for longer periods of confinement – have an emergency facility for this purpose, even if the slave is allowed to regularly visit the toilet.
• Modern day cheap web cams open an excellent opportunity to supervise what is happening inside the cell and it is advisable to invest in a computer cam or a webcam, if you plan to use your cage (or cell) for longer periods of time.
PUNISHMENT CAGES
A punishment cage is usually much smaller. The objective is to keep the sub in a uncomfortable position for a while, such as on her knees, unable to stand up fully erect or in a position where she can hardly move at all. There are hundreds of different designs around, all having their own features.
The cage in the above picture – a custom design – is a specific one. While caged, the sub can stand up and even walk, but she will have to carry the cage herself – as most of her body is still in. As soon as she puts the cage down, she will be made to remain on her knees.
Cages like these are usually designed for specific needs. They are first of all expensive and finding a craftsman, willing and able to make it, may not always be an easy thing to do. In the event you are looking for a punishment cage, or one that can be used during puppy training, try the following: there are quite a few affordable (and foldable and portable) cages around, used for dog exhibitions. Dog owners will use to both transport and house their dogs during the exhibition. Since there are pretty large (and strong) dogs around, you will not have much difficulty finding one that is both large and sturdy enough to hold a sub. Plus, you do not have to explain anything, other than that you own a large dog that you would like to bring to an exhibition. With the help of a few padlocks, these cages are ideal, even if you do not have a fully equipped dungeon.
This for example is the opinion from Jan and Tiny from Holland: “We live on a ship, since we are professional Rhine skippers, transporting cargo up and down the river Rhine. On the ship we do not have much room and building a dungeon is out of the question. So a few years ago we bought a dog-cage. And that is fun. It can be stored under the bed and used whenever and where ever needed. Plus, is is very easy to bring to a party or a gathering, whenever we visit one and Tiny should be caged.”
HANGING CAGES
If you are planning to spend some serious money, you may want to opt for a design like this. This is a replica of the medieval hanging cage, in which criminals would be locked, starved to death and left to rot, while hanging from the local town hall or the city walls.
This is a classic example of an expensive custom design and you are likely to find these – if you are lucky – in clubs or highly sophisticated private dungeons.
A hanging cage is a highly effective instrument for punishment, since it doesn’t allow the sub to rest. Every move she makes will make the cage swing and in most cases she’ll be exposed and subject to all sorts of torture and teasing.
In the event you are planning to invest in a hanging cage, make sure you pay extra attention to the construction of the hanging facility. You need a construction that can handle at least FOUR times the combined weight of the cage PLUS its content, to be able to deal with peak tension.
