GO SLOW!
The general advice is to take a careful route here and allow the train to leave the platform at very slow speed. Do set up one or more test-sessions (i.e. not active play) to find out what this does to you and to your partner. Such test-sessions, for a limited, designated period of time are best done before any investments are done in building or buying cells or cages. It may very well be the tests either will reveal this as a no-go route or will bring about more clarity as to what exactly is needed to let the fantasy come to life.
Let’s give you another real life example of how a seemingly very simple confinement situation turned sour. A Dutch submissive – on the first encounter with a new dominant – upon arrival was confined to a room, where she was locked up and left for “only” half an hour. The objective of the dominant was to make it clear to her that he would not be immediately available and that she had to wait. What happened was that she freaked out, but got no support or even a chance to talk and when the door was finally unlocked she ran out and left. Unfortunately, as a result of this experience, she got very afraid of her own emotions and it took her – and another, understanding, dominant – several years to get her back on track and past her fears.
Your best bet is to try and lock up your partner in a relatively comfortable area – such as a bedroom or guest room – leaving the light on and allowing for sufficient space and may be even some recreation (like having a book to read) and not to cuff or tie her up the first one or two times. This allows her to get comfortable with the idea of being locked up. Best allow her the use of some alarm signal – like a bell or a little horn or an intercom – she can use in the event things do not turn out as desired. Once your first test session works out, try building further carefully before investing in something or doing other more drastic things.
FANTASY & PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS
Do downgrade your fantasy when it comes to confinement. Remember that being locked up by itself will quickly bring up the vivid images that may be there in your fantasy. Even when locked up in your own bedroom (and especially if it is dark) the fantasy will come up quickly and where there used to be a well known piece of furniture pretty soon the fiery red eyes of a hungry rat may appear in your imagination. Familiar sounds may soon turn into the cries of “fellow prisoners” or the sound of rattling chains, dripping water in some faint corner or footsteps of guards (or rats). Confinement is a very powerful tool when it comes to firing up your fantasy. So at least when you start do not try to incorporate too many elements. See what it does first and build up slowly.
The psychological effects of solitary confinement are huge, mainly as a result of the sensory deprivation. Your senses are juggled around because they get too little input. The brain, in need for impulses and activity, will start a life of its own. When the room you are in is dark, this may quadruple this effect. These effects are strengthened by a certain amount of fear and anger, brought about by the fact that your personal freedom is limited, even though this is by freedom of choice. The difference between for example bondage and confinement is mainly in the fact that a bondage usually allows you no or hardly any room to move. Confinement – no matter how limited the space is – will always allow you more space to move, but that only underlines the limitations bestowed upon you.
Two scientific experiments may illustrate the psychological effects of confinement. Back in the 1960’s for example several hundreds of students of Princeton University were – on a voluntary basis – involved in an experiment to try and establish the effects of sensory deprivation. The were locked individually in a very small, light and sound proof room for a maximum of 96 hours. The room was only three square meters wide. The only piece of furniture was a bed. There was a small – also light and soundproof – room with a toilet and a refrigerator with food and drinks. The students would only get paid if the made it the full 96 hours … only ten percent did.
Almost half of the students did not make it though the first three hours. The ones that did appeared to be very vulnerable to brainwash techniques and manipulation – as a result of the fact that their brain and senses where in desperate need for activity and impulses, no matter what kind of activity. Almost all students suffered from nightmares for a longer period of time.
Similar results were reported during a Dutch experiment in 1992. In an effort to try and establish the psychological effects of police cells on arrested persons, the Dutch authorities had several hundreds of volunteers without a criminal record locked up in police cells for 24 hours. They were put through the standard routines. The cells, of course, were neither sound nor light proof and all had the standard contacts with guards. Still almost half of the group appeared unable to undergo the experiment for the full 24 hours. The inability to influence their own situation and taking their fate in their own hands appeared to be the biggest thing for the volunteers.
Other experiments and observations – for example – show that most people who are arrested and are kept in a holding cell will not be able to sleep during the first one or two nights. Although this is partially the result of their fears, uncertainty and the unfamiliar situation, the restrictive aspects of being locked up and unable to move about more or less freely forms a large part of this.
CONSIDER YOUR GOALS
One thing to do before starting to invest in anything is to consider the goals, you want to achieve. For example, there are many different types of cages produced commercially. Most if them allow for a standing position only. These cages can be fun for a short time, but are useless and actually dangerous when used for longer (as in one or two hours or more) periods of confinement. Having to maintain a standing position for a longer period of time is dangerous and may lead to fainting.
If you are planning to go for longer periods of confinement your best bet is to buy or build something that allows for at least a sitting position and if you are going past eight hours or longer your sub needs to be able to lie down. Although there appears to be very little physical activity, the psychological effects will soon wear your sub out and she needs to be able to rest. Next to this, of course, the required atmosphere is something to take into account as well.
