Dungeon Furniture

There are hardly any limitation to the creativity of dungeon furniture designers. As a result there is an endless array of equipment (most of which is only used in clubs and private houses and hardly ever in home dungeons. However, some designs seem to be somewhat standard. In this article we will describe some of them.

Twin pole scaffold

A twin pole scaffold is designed so that the sale can be tied or cuffed in a kneeling position, to poles on either side of her. Usually the kneeling platform is soft and covered with leather, to allow for a longer stay.

If solid and sturdy enough it is an ideal instrument for whipping scenes, since the slave cannot go anywhere and even any attempt to wriggle herself out of harms way is rather useless. Yet there is some room for movement, this of course predominantly to amuse the dominant (and maybe the crowd watching).

Like similar devices such as stakes and pillories, it is also frequently used to expose the slave in a more or less humiliating position for longer periods of time.

Sling

If you are low on budget but would like to buy at least one item of dungeon furniture, invest in a sling. It is one of the most versatile items, ever designed in the BDSM-world. Originally designed to allow for anal fisting in the gay community, the sling has found its way to many dungeons and is used for a variety of play forms.

A sling is nothing else but a small leather hammock, just big enough to support the back and maybe the head. It hangs from four chains from the ceiling and allows for very safe suspension. The slave lays in it (or hangs over it) and can be teased, fisted or just left in an exposed position with her legs spread upward, secured to the chains.

Hanging over it her back and behind make excellent whipping, flogging, caning or paddling targets while she herself is secure, yet will swing under the blows.

A sling is expensive, since it requires sturdy and durable, thick leather. However, once bought it will accompany you for many years during many exciting BDSM sessions.

The Pole

The pole comes in a wide variety of designs, but the objective is always the same. On top of the pole is at least one dildo on which the salve is quite literally impaled, either anal, vaginal or both. She is next tied to the pole and has no other option but to stand there, half aroused with little or no means to be fully satisfied.

The more clever designs come with clip-on or screw on dildo sets – dildos with different sizes, made from different materials and sometimes with a vibrating mechanisms or means for electrical stimulation.

Really clever designs have an extra piece, that allows to position these dildos in the correct angle for vaginal or anal penetration (neither of these openings goes straight up).

If you plan to buy one, observe especially these latter extras. If the dildo goes straight up, the entire device is of no use, since it cannot be used without doing serious damage to either the pubic bone or the tailbone, depending on which the the penetration takes place.

A well designed pole is also telescopic so it can be adjusted to the dimensions of the slave, to be impaled.

A cheaper and actually more versatile variety of the pole is the T-shaped spreader bar, that has one, telescoping bar going up that serves as a pole. These allow you to use impalement in more different ways, such as on a bed or on the floor, instead of (only) standing up. Since dungeon furniture is expensive, you might as well opt for something that allows for more than just one option, since only one option will quickly become boring.

Things to observe

The design and construction must be sturdy and durable as well as adjustable. A dildo, driven too deep into the vagina with the possibility of the full body weight landing on top of it can do serious harm to the uterus. You must be able to leave at least some room to move up and down.

The whole thing is likely to be covered in body fluids every now and then, so it should be easy to clean. Stainless steel is usually your best option, a wooden pole is a very bad choice unless is is well-covered in varnish and maintained very well.

Make sure it has a solid, wide base, so there is no chance your slave AND the pole will fall over. A fall with the thing inside may easily break the pubic bone, the tailbone en do serious damage to the hipbones and venerable organs.

The Love Swing

The love swing is basically something the slave can sit in, more or less suspended. They come in leather and in some form of cloths, either with rope or chains to attach them to the ceiling. The idea is she spreads her legs and sits in two loops, thus reasonable safely suspended. This sounds like a very safe device, but its safety as well as its usefulness are questionable.

The whole thing is not very stable and unless a lot of extra effort is put in securing her hands above her head and preferably her torso as well, there is a serious risk the slave will tip over during violent movement or hot action and fall out of it. Besides, most designs are not exactly functional. While designed so she can be penetrated this hardly ever really works.

Plus, there is a serious risk for the dominant partner. If he penetrates the slave and the slave flips backward (which actually happens frequently) there is a good chance the dom’s scrotum will become entangled in the contraption itself, which is no fun at all, to put it mildly.

Love swings originate from swingers’ clubs and are actually not designed with BDSM in mind and although frequently found in clubs and dungeons, it is better to avoid them entirely.

If you’d like a swing. it is a much better idea to buy a standard swing with a wooden seat – one that has a double set of ropes. Fix leather straps to the seat to hold the legs apart and attach cuffs to the ropes to attach the wrists to (well above the head so the thing is stable) and you’re there: much cheaper and a lot safer.

Alternatively, buy a book about sailors’ knots and learn how to tie a mast-climbing seat from a simple piece of rope, that too works a better and safer. That same seat is also used by mountain climbers as a last resort, if they happen to be out of harnesses. That too forms a very cheap and very safe swing, when combined with cuffs to hold the wrists overhead.
