Labia Piercings
The Labia piercing can be performed anywhere along the length of the Inner Lips (Labia Minora) or Outer Lips (Labia Majora) of the Vagina. Multiple Piercings of this type are usually preferred although some people, initially anyway, decide on getting one piercing only. The inner Labia piercing is the most popular type partly due to their ability to heal quicker. Women often report and increase of sensation to the area after getting these piercings. Placement of the piercing varies greatly depending on the woman’s anatomy. Not all women have the right size and shaped labias to have them pierced. Your Professional Body Piercer should be able to advise you what piercings will work best for you.
History behind the Labia Piercing
In ancient times in Ethiopia, Persia, India and Rome, men had their wives labias pierced and locked with a device to make sure the wife didn’t have sex with other men. This apparently was also done on women slaves, to make sure they didn’t have sex with someone not approved by her owner. Women of the Caroline Islands were also said to wear labia piercings. For them however, it was to give themselves pleasure from the way they looked at felt.
Healing Time
Inner Labia piercings heal quite quickly, usually around 2-4 weeks. Outer Labia piercings normally take longer to heal compared to the Inner Labias, and usually take around 2-3 months. Both types of Labia piercings however, will take extra time to “toughen up”. Be gentle with your new piercing and keep it clean. If you choose to have sex with the jewelry in place make sure that the jewelry is sturdy enough and thick enough to cope with it. Make sure the jewelry will not dragged into the vagina during intercourse (Proper placement of the piercing will help prevent this!) be very careful the jewelry does not tear your skin (Thick gauge jewelry will help reduce this risk) and use condoms to avoid infections.
Make sure your piercer gives you detailed “Aftercare” instructions on exactly how to care for your new piercings. This can make a huge difference to whether your piercing will heal up quickly and stay where positioned or to not heal and migrate through the skin.
Labia Jewelry
The most popular jewelry used in new Labia Piercings is the “Bead Ring”. Bead rings come in many a huge range of sizes, styles and metals which need to be inert in your body. The Bead Ring is sometimes referred to as the Captive Bead ring or CBR. Bead Rings also enable easy cleaning of the piercing as they have no irregular edges or joins that can be accidentally rotated through the piercing. Any irregular surface on your jewelry can carry bacteria or aggravate the piercing when the jewelry is rotated through the piercing. The bead ring is relatively cheap and the bead can easily be changed if you want variety. If you choose a Bead Ring for your Labia Piercing make sure the bead is not one that can break down when it comes in contact with urine and/or body fluids. Your piercer should be able to advise you of what beads are safe.
Wearing thicker jewelry is a very good idea especially in the Inner Labia Piercings. The Inner Labia skin is very thin and soft and more prone to tearing or aggravation if thin jewelry is used. Wearing thick jewelry is also advantageous during sex as the ring will be much stiffer and the ring will be sturdy enough to reduce the chance of the ring flexing and losing the bead. (You really don’t want this to happen during sex!!).
Once your piercing has fully healed you can change your jewelry whenever you wish. But to to avoid complications you should always wear good quality body jewelry of appropriate size and thickness.
Clit Hood Piercings
The Clitoris hood is the loose skin that covers the Clitoris. Usually the hood is pierced horizontally above the Clit so that when a Bead Ring is worn, it will hang down and the bead will sit over or on the Clitoris.
Depending on the person’s anatomy they may be able to choose between either a Horizontal or Vertical Hood piercing. Although some people will be restricted to one or the other and some people will not be able to get either. This will depend on the size and shape of your hood and whether it will be aggravated by the Outer Labias. As everyone is a different shape you may need the help of you Professional Piercer to help you decide which piercing will be possible or best for you.

The Bead Ring needs to have certain a ratio between its diameter and thickness so the ring will be sturdy enough to reduce the chance of the ring flexing and losing the bead. (You really don’t want this to happen during sex!!).
A short straight Barbell may be a better choice of jewelry for the Vertical Hood piercing, once it has healed, as a little Barbell won’t poke out as much as a ring.
