Mummification, Bondage, & Spirit

For many, the image and feeling of being bound is frightening. Placing oneself in a state of being where all control may be lost usually is not what may be considered as pleasurable. Thoughts of prison, loss of freedom, vulnerability, and, for some, claustrophobia may be far to overwhelming to endure. Under what is termed “normal circumstances”, this is probably true for most of us. Yet when W/we consent to allow ourselves to be bound in some fashion it may well be not only pleasurable but awe-inspiring.

In the D/s lifestyle bondage and mummification are but a few scenario elements shared between the Dominant and their submissive. With love, thought, safety, trust, respect and care, the experience can be one of divine and sacred bliss. An opportunity for the Dominant and submissive to grow closer together as well as to begin a never ending process of self awareness and awakening. Most certainly then a spiritual experience that ironically is a journey to complete inner freedom.

In ancient times, the Egyptian high priests and priestesses embarked upon a journey into the Self, to learn and know of their depth of spirit, thereby opening to the magical and mystical realms, eventually leading them home in union with Spirit. Upon becoming an initiate in the ancient mystery schools, one aspect of their learning was to be encased in what might be termed as a casket or sarcophagus. They were then either immersed in water or buried for a period of time. It was believed that through this encasement they would begin the inward journey to self, and by so doing, free themselves of the earthly and travel upon the astral to learn and touch the God/Goddesses of their belief system. there, higher learning would occur. Knowledge and wisdom of the universe would be revealed. Upon emerging from this state of being they could then better minister to the needs of those in worship, touch divinity and with pure heart prophesize to guide and assist the peoples of the land. This is but one example of many that have come from ancient traditions where the use of mummification or bondage is found.

It is my contention that when I take this venture and journey with a submissive, I take it with the clear and sacred intent of growth, learning and the notion of soul freedom. Many times when binding the submissive in plastic wrap, latex or simple rope and leather tethers, I use the image of the caterpillar beginning its metamorphosis into the butterfly. The wrap being the cocoon. Speaking gently and with loving care, I take the submissive into that inner world of self, to look deeply at who they are in truth, their supreme essence of being…to go beyond the physical to experience the soul. Upon so doing, I give them permission to be free of emotional traumas, guilts, shames, etc. Through entering this darkened state, they find that inner light that leads them to their personal and spiritual rebirth and awakening. Then as I begin the process of cutting away the bonds, they emerge as the butterfly, the soul now can soar and be self-realized. The submissive is empowered, confident and embraces a lightness of being. Inner peace and rapture are felt upon all levels of consciousness. For the Dominant, the control they exert is one that is only from a loving foundation. For me, I too soar along with the submissive heart! Is there not a greater gift shared?!

So, when this experience is shared and endeavored, perhaps you may look upon it differently, see the beauty, the growth and loving learning that can be gifted, one unto the other. Look ever deeper to the spoken word and vision that can be melded to form a portrait and path to inner glory and divine surrender. Understand the symbolic notion that within the binding comes the grandest and most sacred, spiritual freedom.

A cautionary word, always take great care when embarking upon this type of play, have another individual present to assist and always reassure the submissive of their safety and the love You share with them throughout the entirety of the journey. It is not about loosing control or gaining it, it is about the exchange of power, equal and passionate. It is truly about a depth of love that transcends the superficial. Allow the heart to be the guide and teacher, not the ego. There is no room for ego as then it becomes dangerous.

Play in this state of love; what joy it shall be!
