The Mat
It is important that the dog has one specific place she can be sent to, either for punishment, or just because her owner has no direct use for her. Most owners will create such a place by giving her a “mat” (mattress or cushion) to sit or lay down on whenever she is being punished, sent off to rethink her situation or simply sent away.
The dog should first of all learn to stay put on the mat until she is called to her owner again or given another assignment. It is an important instrument to keep her in role, especially when she starts begging or tends to become rebellious (which is likely to happen during various stages of training, especially when she is about to cross a mental border).
Leave Her Alone
Important: leave her alone when she’s on her mat. She should be ignored and learn to stay there, even if she does not get any attention.
This is especially important if it is a punishment. Which is why most owners will – especially in the early stages of training, place her on the mat in bondage – uncomfortable – and leave her there for quite a while. By doing so, the dog will learn that being send to her mat without being tied up there is a relatively mild punishment and more a measure for reflection and that things are likely to become much worse if she doesn’t comply.
In the early stages of training - or whenever a more strict form is discipline is required, the owner may have to resort to things, usually not used in puppy training, such as using a gag to make sure that the point that puppies do not talk is driven home. By fully immobilizing her and taking away every possibility to communicate she’ll be brought to self-reflection – while suffering discomfort – and eventually this will teach her that obeying and trusting is the only way to get where she herself wants to be.
Punish and Explain
For this reason it is important that the puppy is not just being punished, but that the punishment is accompanied by an explanation of the reasons why she is being punished. It is a very good idea to do that BEFORE the punishment is being executed, so she can think about the explanation and try to understand it while she is being punished.
The other important thing is to teach her to accept punishment. While unjust punishment of course is not an option (since that would only be counter productive) and the concept of training and teamwork (both very much a part of animal role play) does not really allow for “punishment just for the joy of punishing”, she must learn to accept the situation, even if – occasionally – the owner may have made a mistake or the punishment was not fully in line with the offense.
While this is not an invitation to be unjust, unreasonable or sloppy and ignorant, when it comes to punishment and disciplining, these things do happen and learning to accept that is a big step in accepting that she is a puppy and simply has no say at all – at least not when in her puppy role.
Punishing
Strange as it may sound: punishment and animal role play training do not go together very well. The basic idea of all animal role play is that trainer and trainee become a good team, one working very hard to fall in line with the other and vice versa. So, whenever there is a need for punishment, that is basically a failure for both. Explanation, motivation and stimulation are usually the tools, the owner will use to train his dog.
The dog role doesn’t really leave a lot of options for corporal punishment. Dogs are usually not whipped for example (most dog owners at best will use a newspaper to give their dog the occasional quick stroke) and other forms of corporal punishment do not really fit very good in the dog role.
In the event a thorough flogging or whipping is needed, this is best done in a very specific way, such as by creating a specific posture and creating one specific punishment (which should be fierce, since the fact that there is a need for punishment in fact is a failure) to be able to deal with situations like these.
Other Punishments
Punishments, that fit in the puppy role, are predominantly based around sending her away for a while, such as sending her to her mat or confining her in her cage – if you have one – for a while.
The most effective way to punish is to introduce punishment training sessions. Extra dressage exercises that will be extra demanding and maybe even painful (such as longer crawling sessions). This way the blade will cut both ways. It will improve her performance AND will work as a punishment. And – since the fact that a punishment situation in fact points to a failure – the concept of extra training and dressage fits nicely into the puppy role and the animal role play specifics.
Another technique, some puppy owners will use, is to create special punishment tasks for their puppies.
These will basically be intensified training jobs as well, however concentrated un a particular humiliation, such as long and intensified boot licking jobs, usually combined with a situation, where the puppy will have to make extra physical efforts to get the job done (as in the pictures, disallowing her the use of her arms for support during intensified boot licking). Of course it is totally up to owner and maybe dog to decide what will be useful as a punishment. However, it is important that punishments as such are used as an emergency break.
The dog should understand they ARE exactly that. In the event – which may happen easily – this is the result of too many training exercises and role-specific behavior patterns being presented at the same time, she has to learn to communicate this, instead of trying to please the owner.
Training and behavior pattern development take time (usually a lot) and especially regular training. Trying to accomplish too much at once will usually only lead to failure and disappointment. Bear in mind that what you may see at parties or during demonstrations is usually the result of many years of hard work, a lot of sweat and probably a lot of tears as well.
The Oriental Way
In Japan, where training concepts such as dog play are very popular, a rather specific punishment has been developed. During this punishment the dog will be placed in the basic puppy position, however, hanging on the wall in chains.
This is an extremely demanding and soon very painful position, since muscles will cramp easily. The main advantage however is – besides the fact that is a true punishment of course – that it is a very effective workout for the muscle groups, needed for dog play and as a result the punishment works both as a punishment as well as an intensified training.
