Cages
Using a cage for your dog usually is a pretty appealing part of dog role play. While a cage may be very useful, not every dog is up to it. Do read the articles about cages, UrbanKink offers in the “confinement” section of the Sadist’s Handbook.
One of the first things to consider is what the cage will be used for: punishment, role identification or as a more permanent residence where your dog will spend longer periods of time and maybe even sleep. It is important to think about these issues, since they are of great influence to type of cage you want to buy or build.
Most people will use a cage for punishment/training purposes and role identification. In other words, if and when the puppy is send to the cage, this will either be for a relatively short time or – if it is a punishment – a certain amount of discomfort is not a problem and in fact needed. For these purposes a relatively simple cage will do quite nicely and your best option is to buy a foldable dog cage (picture above). These are used for dog (pet) shows as well as by animal trainers for transportation purposes and you can buy them in many sizes. They are relatively cheap, very easy to use and – probably not unimportant – easy to store since they can be folded and stored under a bed or in a closet. With the help of a few padlocks you can turn these cages into a feature that (even though they are folded, hence simple to dismount) your dog will not be able to open.
These cages will allow your dog to sit on all fours but are not big enough to allow her to stand or sit like a human (which can be very useful for training purposes) and if you keep her in there for only limited periods of time (not more than a few hours maximum) they can be used very effectively, especially when it comes to punishment.
Punishment Cages
Some puppy owners will use specific punishment cages for their dogs. These are usually tailor made (scaffolding material can be very handy to build one quickly and is relatively cheap) and built in such a way that the dog is fixed in one – usually demanding – position in which she will have to remain for the duration of the punishment.
Such punishments are harsh but usually very effective – provided the dog can handle more severe forms of discipline. Being locked in a punishment cage for several hours and left alone to the vast majority of dogs is one of the worst punishments they can get and something that – once tasted – they will try to avoid.
The Kennel
If you happen to have a kennel for your dogs, making your dog slave share this environment with them can be a very effective way to improve her performance as well as a good way to teach her her place. Within the boundaries of the kennel true dog-rules apply. In other words, dogs will teach her her place among them, she will have to learn to “defend” her food and her place to sleep. Also, kennels are usually good places to leave your puppy for longer periods of time, since they will be spacious enough.
Make sure to treat her in exactly the same way you treat the other dogs – in other words feed her when the other dogs are being fed and allow only for toilet visits when the other dogs are being walked.
Even without having to share it, a kennel (in other words a cage where she can stay for longer periods of time) will quite often be useful as a training facility and to generally keep her in role. If you have the option to build a kennel for her, by all means do so. However, you should bear in mind that a kennel should allow for some comfort, in other words there should be reasonable room to move about and to lay down fully stretched (or you will do severe damage to hurt spine).
Especially in the early stages of her training, do allow for something for her to do during prolonged stay in the kennel. Provide a book or something, so she can read. If you don’t, she’ll probably never learn to cope with the longer periods of boredom that come with being locked in a kennel. Plus, she is likely to think of all sorts of scenarios when left alone without any form of mental distraction for longer periods of time. These may very well result in fears.
