Using Tape, Part 1

Using tape for bondage or gagging purposes appeals to many. Very likely because it is something you get to see a lot in porn pictures and movies.

The most frequently used tape – is duct tape. That is the metallic looking, broad, very sticky and very strong tape. In the video production world it is also known as “gaffer tape” and used to tug away cables. Duct tape is actually NOT suitable for bondage and gagging purposes, for several reasons. The main problem is the glue. This will always be some heavy duty industrial adhesive, not developed for use on the skin. It almost always contains toxic materials that may cause allergic reactions and quite often breathing problems. Also, removing the tape may cause skin damage and in general is very painful.

Actually, there are much better and safer options.

Your first safe option is “bondage tape”, nowadays readily available from specialized BDSM shops and webshops. “Bondage tape” sticks on itself and not on the skin and is reusable (not endless, but several times). This makes it an affordable, safe and skin friendly alternative to duct tape.

The second safe option is “sports tape”, available from drugstores and sports shops. Sports tape comes in a variety of sizes, toughness and colors. It is skin friendly (there are even “extra skin friendly” varieties), non-toxic and – while sturdy enough to last through even intense movement – relatively easy to remove.

When using tape to gag, please punch a few holes in it to allow for breathing. This way the submissive partner will not solely have to rely on his or her nose. Not only is this a major safety improvement, it will also take away some of the stress panic, many people feel when being gagged.

Do not put anything inside the mouth, prior to taping (such as a ball, cloths or underwear for example). It is not unlikely such items may block the breathing options altogether, including breathing through the nose. Also, there is the risk of accidental swallowing.

In case your submissive has very delicate skin, try wrapping the designated area in saran wrap first and tape over the foil.
